Do you carry out any checks when an account application is made?
To comply with our regulatory obligations, an assessment of your business will be carried out. This may involve checking external databases to verify your information. The assessment will include an identity search, which will verify all directors, partners, proprietors and ultimate beneficial owners (known as Person(s) of Interest).
If our electronic searches can verify all Person(s) of Interest associated with your application, and your business meets our eligibility criteria, an account will be opened. If we require additional information to open your account, we will contact you via the email address you have provided in your application.
The Person(s) of Interest electronic identity searches are carried out through credit agencies in line with UK Money Laundering Regulations, to ensure the information provided in the application is correct. These searches won’t affect your credit score and won’t be used by lenders to assess credit applications.
In order to perform assessments on your business, for a Limited Company & Limited Liability Partnership, we will verify your company information against the public database held on Companies House.
For more details, please read our Privacy Policy.
What identity and residency documents do I need to provide?
The online application process conducts electronic identification checks to verify the identity of all Person(s) of Interest. If we are unable to verify these details, we will contact you in order to request further information. We may require identification for such person(s).

What is a nominated business bank account? Why do I need to link this?
All customers must provide a nominated business bank account, which must be in the same name as the savings account you are applying for. As Newcastle Building Society operates a closed loop banking facility, i.e. all credits and debits must originate from your nominated business bank account, a nominated business bank account must be provided. Occasionally we may need you to provide evidence that the nominated account is in the name of the business you are looking to open. This is achieved by providing a copy of your business bank statement dated within the last 3 months. This must show the following:
- Business Name
- Account number
- Sort Code
Our business savings account will only accept payment from your nominated business bank account. If we receive an electronic payment from a different account we will return it to the payee’s account.
What is the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) regulation?
A new EU Payments Services Directive (PSD2) was introduced across the financial sector in January 2018. The main purpose of PSD2 is aimed at providing greater customer protection when transacting online.
SCA supports the implementation of PSD2 by introducing additional security features designed to support both consumers and financial institutions, which will enhance online security when making payments.
How does SCA authentication work?
SCA supports PSD2 by providing a second independent source of validation whenever customers are attempting to make online payments, known as two – factor authentication. The Newcastle Building Society SCA Framework has been designed to issue an authentication code, via letter, for all nominated bank account amendments, including the account open process.
To verify the SCA code, log in to your online account where you will be presented with guidance on how to verify your nominated business bank account.
All SCA codes are valid for 28 days and must be actioned prior to any debts being permitted from the account.
How do I make my initial deposit?
As soon as your business savings account is open and ready for your first deposit, you can fund your account by using your nominated business bank account. If your account cannot be opened automatically and requires further information, we will write you to confirm your account details when they are available. As you're making an electronic transfer from your nominated business bank account, you'll need to quote the following details:
Faster Payments / BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing Service)
- Sort code
- Account number
- Your account number must be quoted in the beneficiary field
Can I change my mind?
